Asian stocks began the new year with little enthusiasm, following a modest setback in US stocks, which fell from near-record highs. This hiccup came as a surprise to a market that had been on its longest weekly gain since 2004. This week, the Straits Times Index traded mostly in the green territory. On the last trading day of the year, it edged higher at the opening bell, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street. It continued that positive momentum after the mid-day trading break, looking set to close the year in the green. So will this positive resilience continue into the new year?
