28/10/24 - Morning Shot: Japan’s ruling coalition loses lower house majority in blow to new PM Shigeru IshibaJapanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s ruling coalition lost a majority in the 465-seat lower house in a key parliamentary election held on Sunday (27th October).
According to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, the Liberal Democratic Party, which has governed Japan for all but four years since 1955, lost more than 50 seats in an election for the House of Representatives, the influential lower chamber of Parliament.
Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party remains the top party in Japan’s parliament, and a change of government is not expected but falling short of a majority could make it difficult for Ishiba to get his party’s policies through parliament.
Official results are expected later today (28th October)
On this episode of Morning Shot, Professor Tomohiko Taniguchi, Special Advisor to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Cabinet and Specially Appointed Professor at the University of Tsukuba shares his analysis on what’s in store for Japan’s political landscape moving forward.

25/10/24 - Climate Connections: A scrap revolution - Challenges behind pushing the needle on industrial recyclingIndustrial waste makes up at least 50% of waste generated globally. And much of that waste is the result of poor quality products from manufacturing processes, as well as the sheer complexity of manufacturing and supply chain management.
As consumer awareness about the environmental impacts of waste increases, recycling is expected to grow considerably in the coming years. By 2032, the global waste recycling services market is forecast to have surpassed a value of US$90 billion, registering a compound annual growth rate of 4.7 percent during the forecast period 2023 to 2032.
But cost is often an issue. So, what can be done to scale up recycling within industries?
On this episode of Climate Connections, Susie Burrage, President, Bureau of International Recycling, who will be actively involved in the World Recycling Convention, held in Singapore from 28th to 29th October, shares her perspectives of being a fourth-generation recycler.

24/10/24 - Morning Shot: North Korea's Explosive DiplomacyThe United States has for the first time said it has seen evidence that North Korea has sent 3,000 troops to Russia for possible deployment in Ukraine, a move that could mark a significant escalation in Russia's war against its neighbour.
In the latest of developments, South Korea has summoned the Russian ambassador in Seoul, to criticise Pyongyang's decision to send thousands of soldiers to support Moscow's war in Ukraine. This comes just a week after we heard reports of North Korea blowing up sections of the deeply symbolic roads connecting it to the South, with Pyongyang’s military vowing to permanently seal its southern border.
On this episode of Morning Shot, Oh Joon, Professor of United Nations Studies at Kyung Hee University shares his insights on the escalating tensions between South and North Korea.
