10/05/26 - Saturday Mornings International News Review: Tariffs, Tensions & Tokyo in Shorts; Global Shifts Reshaping Asia This Week🌍 This week’s International News Review unpacks the geopolitical and economic developments shaping markets and policy across Asia.
MoneyFM 89.3 Saturday Mornings Show host Glenn van Zutphen talks with Ethan Wu, Asia Business & Finance Editor at The Economist.
We begin in Washington, where a panel of judges has struck down President Trump’s attempt to impose sweeping 10% blanket tariffs—a ruling that could reshape global trade flows and corporate strategy at a time of rising protectionism. Then, we look ahead to the highly anticipated Xi–Trump meeting, a pivotal moment for US–China relations with implications for supply chains, technology access, and regional stability.
From there, we turn to Japan, where Toyota’s latest earnings reveal a US$4 billion hit from the war in Iran—but also a surprising bright spot: EV sales are set to more than double next year. With 58% of new cars registered in Singapore now electric, Toyota’s pivot matters more than ever to local drivers and the broader mobility ecosystem.
And finally, a cultural shift in Tokyo: the government is ditching strict office dress codes and encouraging workers to wear shorts amid the energy crunch. What does this say about changing workplace norms in Asia?

10/05/26 - Saturday Mornings: Remembering Ted Turner - The Politically Incorrect Maverick Who Invented 24 Hour News and Changed the World🌍This week, the broadcasting world lost a giant — a man whose influence reaches every newsroom, every screen, and every listener tuned into MoneyFM89.3.
Ted Turner was the bold, controversial, visionary founder of CNN; he died at the age of 87 on 6 May 2026. His audacity didn’t just change television; it changed how the entire world receives news.
MoneyFM 89.3 Saturday Mornings Show host Glenn van Zutphen talks with Michael Holmes, former CNN International anchor and correspondent for 28 years from Atlanta. Michael is one of countless journalists who lived Turner’s legacy from the inside. He helps us understand the man behind the revolution — and why Ted Turner’s impact on global storytelling remains unmatched.
From launching the world’s first 24‑hour news channel in 1980 to building TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies, Turner reshaped global media, sports, entertainment, and even environmental philanthropy. He was called many things — “The Mouth of the South,” “Captain Outrageous,” a disruptor, a genius — but above all, he was a builder of institutions that still define modern journalism. We look at the life and legacy of a man I had the privilege to meet several times during my years at CNN International including a memorable dinner with him when I served as President of the Atlanta Press Club in 2003-2004.

A small sub-segment of "indian food" - Sindi came out of the partion of India and Pakistan. Recently for three nights in Singapore, Firangi Superstar restaurant hosted one of the most exciting culinary collaborations of the year brining Sindi cooking to town. Chef Vicky — one of India’s most celebrated chefs, former Executive Chef of the Queen Mary 2, TV personality, and award‑winning author — presented a deeply personal menu rooted in Sindhi cuisine, the food he grew up eating but rarely cooked professionally. Dishes like Sai Bhaji and Aloo Tukk Bravas showcased heritage elevated through modern technique. Chef Raj, Group Head Chef of The Dandy Collection, shares how Firangi Superstar is pushing Indian cuisine into new territory — bold, immersive, and unapologetically inventive. Together, they discuss the global rise of regional Indian cuisine, why Singapore is ready for this shift, and how events like the Sindhi Supper Club are rewriting expectations.

Their programs are EL Play, EL Build, and EL Create and are now reaching 10,000 children across multiple countries. In Singapore, EL Play is already running in three public schools in Yishun, with plans to expand and introduce EL Build next year. Each child’s full program costs just USD 120 (SGD 400), covering sessions, journals, and a sports kit. Ravi and Aparna share powerful stories of how their programs help children — especially girls — build confidence, leadership, and resilience. We begin in the Middle East, where Iran says the Strait of Hormuz is now fully open (or maybe closed, we're not sure) during the ceasefire, easing immediate fears over global oil supply disruptions. But with tensions still simmering, the world is watching closely to see whether this fragile opening holds. Back home, Singapore is responding to a US probe into alleged forced labour, with the Ministry of Trade and Industry emphasising that Singapore takes such allegations seriously and maintains strict labour standards. Steve explains what this means for Singapore’s reputation, trade relationships, and global supply chain confidence. In Southeast Asia, Indonesia and the United States have signed a new defence pact, signalling deepening military cooperation at a time of rising regional competition. We explore what this means for ASEAN security dynamics.
And finally, a story that has gripped South Korea: "Nuisance Influencer” American YouTuber Ramsey Khalid Ismael — known for provocative stunts — has been sentenced to six months in a Korean prison for disrespecting a memorial to wartime sexual slavery victims.
