10/03/25 - Morning Shot: What does the new high-potential geothermal energy site in Yishun mean for Singapore's future geothermal ambitions?NTU researchers have uncovered evidence of a new high-potential geothermal energy site in Yishun.
Leveraging advanced seismic imaging techniques to explore underground heat potential in northern Singapore, the team found a geothermal reservoir, sitting above a depth of around 4km.
This comes on the back of Singapore’s ambition to develop green energy resources to meet growing electricity demands and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
In the next phase of their study, researchers will be burying another 80 seismic sensors underground, spanning the north-east and south of Singapore.
On this episode of Morning Shot, NTU's Associate Professor Tong Ping from the School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences, Asian School of the Environment, and Principal Investigator at the Earth Observatory of Singapore shares his insights.
