27/10/23 - Why It Matters: Consumers Want Businesses to Take More Responsibility for Mobile Scams
Singaporeans were scammed of more than $10 million in the first six months of 2023. Unfortunately, the so-called ‘scamdemic’ shows no signs of slowing down. However, in Appdome’s  2023 APAC Consumer Expectations of Mobile Security survey, more than half of the 75,000 respondents in 12 countries said that the responsibility to protect them lies with the brands behind mobile apps. Clearly, consumers feel that businesses are not doing enough to protect them and want them to take greater responsibility. Jan Sysmans, Mobile App Security Evangelist of Appdome explains why businesses should pay attention to what their customers are saying.

27/10/23 - Under the Radar: Sheffield Green’s Chairman and CEO on its upcoming Catalist IPO and opportunities for HR recruitment as the O&G industry rides the green wave
Providing HR recruitment services to specifically the renewable energy industry. That’s what we are going to talk about today.  Incorporated in 2021, Sheffield Green is the renewable energy spinoff of Sheffield Energy, which is a recruitment firm specialised in serving the oil and gas sector over the past 30 years.  The subsidiary provides end-to-end services ranging from supplying technical and management staff to peripheral services including training as well as administrative paperwork.  We’re talking about Sheffield Green because it has recently completed its registration to list on the Catalist Board of the Singapore Exchange.  The firm is offering 24.0 million shares, of which 3.6 million are for public offering. The counter is set to begin trading on 30 October, with an issue price of 25 Singapore cents apiece.  This will mean a valuation of S$46.6 million for Sheffield Green if all shares on offer are subscribed.  Question is – what are some of the opportunities that Sheffield Green wants to tap as the O&G industry rides on the green wave? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway’s finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Bryan Kee, Chairman, CEO and Executive Director, Sheffield Green.

27/10/23 - Weekly Wrap Up: Are Singaporeans over the Five ‘C’s?
In the past, Singaporeans talked about chasing the Five ‘C’s but nowadays we no longer focus on them anymore. More than materialism, Singaporeans now chase meaning and the evolving Singapore Dream must be reflected in key shifts around how its citizens define success across all areas of life. This was outlined in the Forward SG report, which laid out a roadmap for a new way forward for Singapore. Dr Tan Ern Ser, Sociologist, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology; Academic Convener, Singapore Studies, National University of Singapore (NUS) shares his thoughts on this report.

Singapore stocks opened softer today following overnight losses on Wall Street as traders reacted to mixed earnings. In early trade, the Straits Times Index (STI) headed down 0.3 per cent to 3,070.14 points after 55 million securities changed hands in the broader market. In terms of companies to watch, we have UOB. The bank reported net profit of S$1.38 billion for the third quarter ended September.  That’s down 1 per cent from S$1.4 billion in Q3 FY2022, after accounting for one-off expenses related to the acquisition of Citigroup’s Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam consumer banking business. Elsewhere, from quarterly Singapore retrenchments at its highest since Q4 2020, China’s new bonds to help economic recovery, and Facebook parent Meta warning about the outlook for next year, more macroeconomic and corporate headlines remain in focus.  On Market View, The Evening Runway’s finance presenter Chua Tian Tian dived into the details with Terence Wong, CEO, Azure Capital.

26/10/23 - Euro Watch: Will EU leaders agree on a 'humanitarian pause' in Gaza?
The leaders of the European Union's member states are set to meet in Brussels to discuss the Israel-Hamas war and the possibility of issuing a joint call for a 'humanitarian pause' to allow more emergency aid into the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has paid a visit to Israel, where he said the ‘first objective’ in the conflict should be to secure the release of those held hostage by Hamas. But, with France home to the biggest Jewish and Muslim populations in Europe, how will Macron balance domestic pressures and its position in the conflict? We unpack these issues with Cedomir Nestorovic, Professor of Geopolitics, ESSEC Business School, Asia-Pacific.

26/10/23 - Under the Radar: A museum or an attraction? Museum of Ice Cream explains its positioning and its recipe for sustainable revenue growth
Is the Museum of Ice Cream a museum or an attraction? That’s the question we’re going to pose to its business leader today!   Founded by global lifestyle brand Figure8, the Museum of Ice Cream consists of fully immersive spaces like a pool of rubber sprinkles, a unicorn headed slide and more.  With locations in Austin, Chicago, New York City and Singapore, the firm calls itself a pioneer in the experience-first industry that helps to rediscover the kid in the young and old.  But how does the Museum of Ice-Cream define the space in which it operates in as far as its pricing strategy, product pipeline and valuations are concerned?  Speaking of which, the company’s parent Figure8 was valued at US$200 million in 2019 after receiving US$40m of Series A funding led by consumer venture capital firms including Elizabeth Street Ventures. But what numbers are we looking at right now, four years down the road? What are some of the firm’s recipes for sustainable revenue growth in the longer term? In the meantime, Toronto-based company Lighthouse Immersive – which is behind the “Immersive Van Gogh” exhibition – had reportedly filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy earlier this year.  What does this suggest about the challenges experiential museum operators face? And are we seeing a consolidation in the industry in the near term?  On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway’s finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Pirakash T, Head of Revenue & Growth at Museum of Ice Cream.
